To commemorate World Emoji Day (an informal holiday celebrated with emoji events and product launches), the sandal brand Reef requires the Unicode Standard, the body that controls emoji, to add a trigger icon to its official emoji keyboard.

If accepted, the emoji may pop up on the keyboard immediately in 2020.

At the same time, Reef encourages consumers to participate in the process by posting the #insertflipflopemoji tag on social media.

The company brings emoji to life through pale yellow and orange prototype sandals. Although the silhouette itself cannot be sold, consumers may add it to their text messages soon.

Launched in 2014, World Expression Day was founded by Jeremy Burge, who founded Emojipedia, an emoji reference site that documents the use of Unicode standard characters.

The Reef was founded in 1984 and appeared earlier than the emoji. Although the brand is known for herringbone, it also offers a variety of looks, including women's canvas shoes and sneakers, as well as men's and children's styles.

Last week, the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company launched its first Pride footwear collection, which was the headline news, embracing the inclusive and versatile “Freedom Beach” slogan that represents the beach.
